The Solos Project 2 – Call for Applicants

Burton Taylor Studio Theatre 12th – 17th January 2009

Reminder that the application deadline for The Solos Project 2 approaches - applications should be in by 31st July. Should you have any queries about applying please contact Susie Crow by email or telephone by Monday 21st July latest.

(NB: Applicants to the previous Project who were not selected are welcome to apply again)

Following the sell-out success of The Solos Project in January 2008, a further edition will be held at the Burton Taylor Studio Theatre in January 2009, curated by Susie Crow of Ballet in Small Spaces, and with the support of Oxford Playhouse. The Solos Project 2 will once again provide opportunities for locally based artists to develop and present new solo work, reflecting both the dance tradition or genre they work within, and their own individual ideas and skills. The programme will be selected to showcase the diversity of dance talent and professional practice in Oxford and surrounding areas. Inclusion will give artists a valuable opportunity to explore solo work in a supportive environment, and develop their skills and artistry in performance in the intimate and atmospheric space of the Burton Taylor Studio.

Selected artists will present a solo of between 6 and 10 minutes duration, either without music or with recorded music/sound (space restrictions preclude the use of live music). Funding permitting a designer and lighting designer will work with each artist to develop appropriate costuming and visual environment for their particular solo. Artists will be responsible for rehearsing and developing their own work, although Ballet in Small Spaces will organise appropriate provision of mentoring and hopes to make some subsidised rehearsal time and space available for participants. There will be two days allocated for rehearsal in the space at the beginning of the week and this year a lighting design workshop day at the Burton Taylor is planned. Artists will receive a performance fee for the week; venue programmers will be invited and it is hoped that in conjunction with works from the previous edition aspects of the programme may have potential for further performances in the area.

I would like to invite members of Oxford Dance Forum and other locally based professional dance artists who would be interested in presenting work to contact me by end of July. All ages, genders, ethnicities, genres and styles are welcome to apply. Please send a one-side of A4 proposal containing the following: · Brief biography covering dance training, performance and creative experience. · Brief description of your work and within what genre or genres you would situate it. · Brief statement of why you would like to be part of this project, which could include mention of ideas or material you are interested to explore in a solo, or how this might contribute to your professional development. · Full contact details Accompanying visual documentation (weblinks, photos, DVD or video) not essential but appreciated. Successful applicants from the previous Solos Project are not eligible to apply again.
